We’ve all heard about the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East but a new challenger has emerged aiming to join the ranks. Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands celebrates the Midlands, taking in Leitrim, Roscommon, East Galway, East Clare, North Tipperary, Offaly, Westmeath, Longford and Cavan. The initiative was launched this morning and one of the people behind it, Minister of State in the Office of Public Works Kevin “Boxer” Moran, came on Today with Sean O’Rourke to tell him about it.
“It’s a wonderful project. It’s something that’s been talked about for a great number of years…We know how good tourism has done in terms of bringing this country somewhat out of the recession it found itself [in] all those years ago and, I suppose, putting a branding name on it, that’s all down to Fáilte Ireland.”
The project came about to address what Kevin saw as several counties being left behind in terms of tourism promotion.
“What we have is a centre of Ireland…that’s been left without a proper title in terms of tourism.”
