Pádraic Rocliffe is a 26-year old student of Physical Education in University of Limerick. As part of his degree, he travelled to the United States in September last year to spend a semester studying Physical Education in Long Beach, California. He was only there a few weeks when he was involved in a road accident, as he recounted to Dave Fanning, sitting in for Ryan:
“I was involved in a roll-over accident out in a place called Death Valley, of all places.”
The accident left him with a broken neck, back and foot, but while sitting in the wreckage, he was unaware of this, as he struggled to get out of the car, which was on its side. Then an extraordinary thing happened:
“The only way I can describe it is that God spoke to me and he said, sit back into the car, put your back up against the roof, which I did…”
Pádraic says that when God told him that he wouldn’t be paralysed, he experienced an overwhelming feeling of calmness and he knew that he’d be okay. He waited in the car for two hours before emergency services arrived, but to him, he told Dave, it felt like no more than ten minutes. He was taken to a level one trauma centre in Las Vegas, where he would spend three weeks, before being transferred to a rehabilitation hospital for another month, and then on to an athletic rehabilitation facility.
“I honestly thought I had whiplash… that I would be honestly home that evening. So when I got into the trauma centre and I was surrounded by dozens of doctors, I suppose I began to realise how serious the situation was.”
Dave wondered if Pádraic’s faith and his belief in the voice that had spoken to him while he lay in the car meant he never wavered in his conviction that he would make a full recovery.
“In the long run, it’ll be the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s given me a completely different perspective on life.”
Pádraic tells a compelling story about his recovery and how a chance encounter led him to set up a new initiative for the homeless and you can hear his full story, as well as the rest of The Ryan Tubridy Show here:
